Comedian and actor Ron Funches is speaking candidly about the ups and downs of his hair transplant journey, including a particularly awkward moment that played out while he was in the public eye.
The 42-year-old performer, who currently appears on The Traitors, shared a series of Instagram Stories on Sunday, Jan. 18, reflecting on his experience with the cosmetic procedure. In his posts, Funches addressed the so-called “shedding phase” — a temporary stage of hair transplantation in which newly transplanted hairs fall out before regrowing.
In his first message, Funches admitted he learned an important lesson: timing matters. “I recently learned the lesson of not going on a big show during the ‘shedding phase’ of a hair transplant,” he wrote, adding that the phase tends to draw unsolicited attention online. He punctuated the realization with a self-aware “Whoops.”
The shedding phase, also known as shock loss, is a normal part of the hair transplant process, during which hair follicles reset before producing new growth. While medically expected, it can be visually noticeable — something Funches experienced firsthand.
Despite the temporary setback, Funches expressed confidence in the results so far. In a follow-up post, he wrote, “But the comeback is strong,” alongside a photo showing a fuller head of hair, soundtracked to Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair.” He later shared an overhead photo of his hair, assuring followers he wasn’t concealing any angles. “We’re at about 60% on the time frame,” he noted.
The stand-up comedian also took a moment to reflect on his appearance before the procedure, offering a positive perspective on his former look. Posting a throwback image, Funches wrote, “But found out bald me is beautiful. So who knows,” signaling a sense of self-acceptance regardless of the outcome.
Funches joins a growing list of public figures who have recently been open about undergoing hair restoration procedures. Last summer, Love Is Blind season 6 alum Jimmy Presnell discussed his own transplant after debuting a noticeably different hairstyle. Actor and former professional wrestler John Cena also revealed that he underwent a hair transplant in November 2024.
In a previous interview with PEOPLE, Cena said he was happy with the results but regretted waiting so long. “I hate the fact that if there wasn’t so much shame around it, I’d have gotten it done 10 years ago,” he said, noting that hair loss affects the majority of men. Cena added that the procedure significantly changed his life, emphasizing that there should be no stigma around seeking it.
As more celebrities share their experiences, Funches’ candid posts highlight both the vulnerability and humor that can come with navigating personal changes in the public eye.
