Extreme Weight-Loss Plan Backfires: Chinese Woman Loses 15 Kg in Two Months, Diagnosed with Prediabetes

by Shreeya

A 26-year-old woman from Hangzhou, China, learned the hard way that rapid weight loss can come with serious health risks. In an effort to slim down for her best friend’s wedding, Xiaoyu pushed herself to shed nearly 15 kilograms in just two months. While she achieved her goal weight, the extreme regimen left her facing a prediabetes diagnosis.

According to the South China Morning Post, Xiaoyu followed what has been described as a “devil weight-loss plan.” The approach involved drastically cutting staple foods and surviving on minimal portions of vegetables and chicken breast, combined with grueling workouts that sometimes included running more than 10 kilometers a day.

Initially, the results were dramatic, and Xiaoyu reached her target weight of 50 kilograms just in time for the wedding. However, the success was short-lived. She soon developed alarming symptoms including persistent fatigue, extreme thirst, constant hunger, dizziness, and heart palpitations.

Seeking medical help at the Endocrinology Department of Hangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Xiaoyu’s tests revealed elevated fasting blood glucose and abnormal two-hour glucose tolerance levels. These findings confirmed a diagnosis of prediabetes.

A doctor explained, “She had almost completely eliminated carbohydrates from her diet while engaging in high-intensity exercise. This disrupted insulin secretion, caused significant muscle and water loss, and severely damaged her metabolism.”

After her diagnosis, Xiaoyu adopted a healthier lifestyle, including a balanced diet and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise with limited anaerobic workouts. Over the next three months, her weight stabilized at 52.5 kilograms, and her overall health improved significantly.

The so-called “Devil Weight-Loss Plan,” according to SCMP, refers to extreme, self-designed diets that are not medically approved. These regimens typically combine severe calorie restriction with intense physical activity, often excluding staple foods and putting the body under excessive stress.

Medical experts warn that such unregulated approaches can lead to metabolic damage, malnutrition, hormonal imbalances, and other serious health complications. Xiaoyu’s experience serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of rapid, extreme weight loss and the importance of sustainable, balanced health practices.
