Comedian and voice actor Ron Funches is sharing an honest look at the ups and downs of his hair transplant journey. The 42-year-old, currently starring on The Traitors, reflected on the challenges of the procedure in a series of Instagram Stories, including the often-discussed “shedding” phase.
In a post shared Sunday, Jan. 18, Funches admitted he learned the hard way about timing the procedure around work commitments. “The lesson of not going on a big show during the ‘shedding phase’ of a hair transplant,” he wrote, noting that viewers quickly noticed the temporary hair loss. He humorously summed it up with, “Whoops.”
The shedding phase, also known as shock loss, is a normal part of the hair transplant recovery process. During this stage, transplanted hairs fall out as follicles reset, making way for new growth.
Funches later shared an update on his progress, posting a photo showing a full head of hair paired with Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair.” “But the comeback is strong,” he captioned, signaling that his new growth is well underway. He also shared an overhead-back view of his hair, noting, “We’re at about 60% on the time frame,” giving fans a glimpse of the ongoing transformation.
Reflecting on his pre-transplant appearance, Funches also shared a throwback photo of his bald self. “But found out bald me is beautiful,” he wrote, showing that he maintains a positive perspective on his look before the procedure.
Funches isn’t alone in opening up about hair transplants. Reality star Jimmy Presnell of Love Is Blind season 6 recently revealed his own experience, while actor and former professional wrestler John Cena underwent the procedure in November 2024. Speaking with PEOPLE last year, Cena praised his new look and shared one regret: he wished he had done it earlier.
“I thought I was alone, but seven or eight out of 10 [men] suffer from thinning or baldness,” Cena said. He emphasized the simplicity of the procedure, which moves hair from one area to another, and noted how transformative it has been. “It completely changed the course of my life,” he added, encouraging men to approach hair restoration without shame.
