As the popularity of GLP-1 weight loss medications like Ozempic continues to rise, scammers are increasingly targeting consumers with fake offers, fraudulent websites, and misleading promotions.
The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau (BBB) has reported a sharp increase in complaints from consumers who have fallen victim to these schemes. Scammers are using a variety of tactics, including AI-generated ads, fake texts and emails, counterfeit online pharmacies, and bogus product shipments.
Common GLP-1 Scams to Watch For
According to the BBB, the most prevalent scams currently circulating include:
- AI-generated ads with fake celebrity or doctor endorsements
- Fraudulent texts, emails, and phone calls claiming eligibility for weight loss programs
- Fake online pharmacies and health retailers offering discounted medications
- Missing or counterfeit product shipments
AI-Powered Deception
With artificial intelligence becoming more accessible, scammers are creating highly convincing but entirely fake endorsements. One report detailed a consumer who clicked on a video promoting “Lipo Max” as an alternative to GLP-1 injections. The video appeared to feature Oprah Winfrey alongside a doctor. After purchasing the product for over $300, the consumer realized the video was AI-generated and could not obtain a refund, as their email bounced back.
Fake Texts, Emails, and Websites
Scammers often send urgent messages claiming recipients are “eligible” for GLP-1 prescriptions or weight loss programs, directing them to fraudulent websites. These sites frequently advertise medications at discounted rates. Consumers who provide payment information may never receive the product—or may receive unsafe or diluted versions.
In one BBB Scam Tracker report, a consumer searching for a cheaper GLP-1 shot paid a $32 membership fee online. Shortly afterward, they were charged multiple $670 attempts nearly every other day, despite contacting the company to cancel.
Missing or Fake Shipments
Another common tactic involves taking payments for products that are never delivered. Scammers may offer excuses about shipping delays and provide minimal customer support, often limited to automated chat boxes. Requests to cancel orders are frequently ignored.
The BBB urges consumers to remain vigilant and verify the legitimacy of any GLP-1 or weight loss product before making purchases. Protecting personal and financial information is crucial as these scams continue to evolve.
