A new study by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, has revealed that structured meal planning significantly enhances weight loss, highlighting the benefits of preparation and personalized nutrition.
The research analyzed nearly 78,000 participants in the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet program and found:
- Members who frequently used meal plans lost an average of 6.4 kg in 12 weeks, 24% more than those who used them less.
- Early adoption of meal plans had an even greater impact, with users losing 6.9 kg after a year, 48% more than infrequent users.
To better understand participants’ experiences, CSIRO surveyed 1,300 current and former members. Results showed:
- 90% of those who achieved their weight loss goals relied on a meal plan.
- 89% of members losing more than 10 kg in 12 weeks credited meal plans as essential to their success.
Among members who did not lose weight, 72% said personalized meal plans aligned with their lifestyle could have improved their results.
“Meal planning provides the know-how of what to eat and builds habits essential for long-term weight loss success,” said CSIRO Research Scientist Dr. Gilly Hendrie. “There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, and personalization can make a real difference.”
In response to the findings, the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet has introduced My Plan, an AI-powered tool that generates personalized meal plans for each member. This is the first innovation of its kind in the program’s 20-year history.
My Plan tailors meal plans to individual preferences, allergies, intolerances, eating styles, and health conditions such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. It also considers life stages like menopause, and adapts over time to better meet members’ needs.
“AI allows us to personalize meal plans at scale,” said Dr. Hendrie. “We used 23 million data points from more than a decade of meal plan usage among 200,000 members to train the AI behind this tool.”
Dietitian Nicole Pritchard emphasized that unlike many international weight loss tools, My Plan is designed specifically for Australians, based on local dietary guidelines and integrated with the trusted CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet framework.
With these innovations, the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet aims to help Australians achieve their health and weight loss goals more effectively than ever.
