A Russian-born influencer and mother of one has died at the age of 38 after suffering a sudden medical emergency during a cosmetic surgery procedure, prompting a criminal investigation in Moscow.

Yulia Burtseva, who had been living in Italy with her husband and young daughter, reportedly collapsed shortly after receiving injections as part of a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure. According to Russian media reports, doctors were unable to revive her despite emergency efforts.

Just hours before her death, Burtseva shared a cheerful video on social media, showing herself enjoying breakfast at the upscale Pushkin Café in central Moscow on Sunday, January 4. The post has since taken on tragic significance for her followers, many of whom struggled to reconcile the upbeat footage with the devastating news that followed.

Burtseva had traveled from Italy to the Russian capital only a day earlier for the cosmetic procedure, which reportedly cost more than $6,000. Known online as a “momfluencer,” she had amassed thousands of followers by documenting her family life abroad and frequently speaking about her experiences as a Russian woman married to an Italian national.

A Brazilian Butt Lift involves transferring fat from areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, or lower back into the buttocks. While popular, the procedure is considered one of the most dangerous cosmetic surgeries due to the risk of fat embolism—a potentially fatal condition in which fat enters the bloodstream and blocks blood vessels in the lungs. Russian outlet MSK1 reported that Burtseva’s condition deteriorated rapidly after the operation, with preliminary information suggesting she suffered an anaphylactic shock.

News of her death sparked an outpouring of grief and shock online. “She was filming stories just hours ago—can this really be true?” one follower wrote. Another commented, “Ten hours earlier she was smiling and happy. This is terrifying.” Others used the moment to warn about the risks of cosmetic surgery, expressing condolences to her family.

Authorities have since opened a criminal probe into the incident. The Moscow Investigative Committee confirmed that investigators are collecting medical records, documents, and other evidence from the clinic. A series of forensic and medical examinations has been ordered, though attempts to obtain comment from the clinic’s director have reportedly been unsuccessful.

Originally from Samara, Russia, Burtseva moved to Italy five years ago, where she married Giuseppe, a Neapolitan native. Her social media content often highlighted family life, Italian culture, and close moments with her husband, daughter, and mother-in-law. She had also previously shared details of her experiences with medical tourism, including traveling to Turkey for dental procedures.

Her sudden death has reignited public discussion around the safety of high-risk cosmetic surgeries and the growing global market for medical tourism.
