Mercy Medical Center Pioneers FDA-Approved MarginProbe 2 Technology to Improve Breast Cancer Surgery Outcomes

Mercy Medical Center has become the first hospital worldwide to utilize the newly FDA-approved MarginProbe 2 technology during breast-conserving surgery, the hospital announced Sunday, Jan. 4.

The innovative device allows surgeons to examine tissue in real time during surgery, determining whether all cancerous cells have been removed. This advancement significantly reduces the likelihood that patients will need a follow-up procedure.

MarginProbe 2 delivers results within minutes, confirming whether the edges of excised tissue are free of cancer. According to Virginia-based Dilon Technologies, which markets the device, studies indicate that the technology increases sensitivity across all tumor types.

“MarginProbe 2 is a game-changer for breast surgery,” said George Makhoul, CEO of Dilon Technologies. “By providing surgeons with immediate, reliable margin information, we’re helping reduce re-excision rates and improve the overall surgical experience for both patients and healthcare providers.”

Dr. Vincent Reid, a surgical oncologist at Mercy, highlighted the precision the device brings to breast-conserving procedures. “Within minutes, I know if we’ve removed all the cancer,” he said. “That allows me to make the best decision for my patient immediately, avoiding the need for another surgery.”

Mercy Medical Center has previously used the original MarginProbe and participated in clinical trials for the upgraded version. The FDA approved MarginProbe 2 following studies demonstrating improved accuracy and surgeon confidence in decision-making during breast cancer surgery.

Originally developed by Dune Medical Devices, the technology was later acquired by Dilon Technologies, a company focused on enhancing surgical precision and patient outcomes.
