As the new year begins, millions of Americans set their sights on improving their health, often with weight loss at the top of the list. However, reaching these goals can be challenging, according to Norton Healthcare nurse practitioner Jenn Truman.
“There is so much conflicting information, they don’t know what to listen to,” Truman said, highlighting a common hurdle many face when trying to start a healthier lifestyle.
Rather than attempting drastic life changes, Truman recommends making small, manageable adjustments to daily routines.
“You cannot change every little aspect of your life at once,” she said. “It’s just not feasible with our busy lifestyles. I am a big fan of making small changes and incorporating those into your routine.”
Truman suggests beginning with simple dietary improvements, such as increasing fiber and lean protein intake while reducing processed foods. She also emphasized the importance of self-compassion during the weight-loss journey.
“Give yourself a little grace,” Truman said. “There is no journey that is only downhill. You’re going to do well, you’re going to stall. Give yourself the grace to say, ‘OK, I did that, and that’s fine. I am going to pick it back up.'”
Experts also stress that before starting any weight-loss or fitness program, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider to ensure safety and suitability.
