Dermatologists Say Thinning Hair Can Be Reversed at Home—If You Treat the Root Cause First

Noticing thinning hair at the temples or extra strands left behind in your hairbrush can be unsettling. While hair loss is extremely common—and often linked to harmless or temporary factors—many people still hope to restore the fuller hair they once had. According to dermatologists, that goal may be more achievable than expected, thanks to effective treatments that can be used at home.

However, before turning to over-the-counter solutions, experts stress the importance of identifying the underlying cause. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Blair Murphy-Rose, who practices in New York City, says addressing the root issue is key to seeing meaningful results.

Dr. Murphy-Rose explains that two of the most frequent causes of hair loss are hormonal thinning and telogen effluvium, a condition marked by excessive shedding. Telogen effluvium can be triggered by a wide range of factors, including metabolic stress, illness, or changes in medication. Other potential contributors include nutritional deficiencies, genetic factors, and medical conditions such as thyroid disorders.

“It is important to have an evaluation of your hair and scalp health by a medical professional and to discuss potential underlying conditions,” Dr. Murphy-Rose said, noting that a dermatologist is well-equipped to perform this assessment.

When hair loss is linked to vitamin deficiencies, treatment may involve dietary supplements such as iron or vitamin D3. In cases of hormonal thinning or telogen effluvium, improvement may come from topical treatments, medicated shampoos, and other targeted hair-care products recommended by dermatologists.

Before starting any regimen, experts also emphasize patience. New York City-based, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Brendan Camp advises that hair loss treatments typically need time to work.

“Hair loss treatments should be used for at least three to four months before deciding if they are effective or not,” Dr. Camp said.

With the right diagnosis, consistent treatment, and realistic expectations, dermatologists say many people can see noticeable improvements—without ever leaving home.
