FSN, a KOSDAQ-listed company, has revealed survey results from its subsidiary Daedamo.com regarding public opinion on expanding national health insurance to cover hair loss treatments. The survey indicates that over 80% of respondents support the inclusion of hair loss medications under health insurance.
The issue has gained momentum following the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s recent announcement in its work report that it will explore measures to extend coverage for hair loss treatments. Currently, only treatments for autoimmune-related hair loss conditions, such as alopecia areata and seborrheic dermatitis, are covered, while medications for hereditary hair loss remain non-reimbursable.
Daedamo, Korea’s largest hair loss community with 440,000 members, saw a roughly 20% increase in new registrations in the week after the policy review news on December 16. Analysts interpret this surge as a reflection of high expectations among affected individuals, who hope that policy changes could help reduce the financial burden of long-term hair loss medication use.
From December 18, Daedamo conducted a survey titled, “Is hair loss a matter of survival? Should hair loss medication also be covered by insurance?” More than 800 members participated, with 84% expressing support for health insurance coverage, while 16% opposed it.
Supporters cited the economic strain of non-covered medications and the psychological impact of hair loss as key reasons for backing the policy. Younger respondents, who are active in social and professional spheres, emphasized that hair loss affects employment opportunities, social interactions, and even marriage prospects. They argued that while hair loss may not be life-threatening, policy support is essential to improve overall quality of life.
Conversely, some members expressed caution, raising concerns about the financial sustainability of the national health insurance system and the importance of prioritizing essential medical care. Discussions have also evolved to explore practical solutions, including differentiated support by age group, annual claim limits, and phased coverage based on hair loss severity.
A Daedamo representative stated, “This survey highlights the strong interest and practical concerns among people with hair loss regarding insurance coverage for medication. As a leading community where members share experiences and make their voices heard, Daedamo will continue to facilitate informed discussions across policy, healthcare, and industry.”
