Hair loss has long trapped sufferers in a frustrating cycle of oils, supplements, shampoos, and home remedies—with many eventually relying on minoxidil as a consistent solution. While widely used and sometimes effective, minoxidil does not work equally well for everyone, prompting researchers to explore ways to enhance its performance.
A recent study led by Lifeng Kang and his team at the University of Sydney has taken an unexpected approach: rather than developing a new hair loss drug, the researchers investigated whether a compound derived from a common sugar substitute—stevioside from the stevia plant—could improve minoxidil’s absorption and effectiveness.
How stevioside could enhance hair growth
The research did not involve applying stevia itself to the scalp. Instead, the focus was on stevioside, a naturally occurring compound in stevia. Poor skin absorption is a major limitation of minoxidil, and scientists explored whether stevioside could help the medication reach hair follicles more efficiently.
In the study, minoxidil was delivered through microneedle patches containing stevioside. These patches create tiny, painless channels in the skin, allowing the drug to penetrate deeper into hair follicles. Experiments on mice prone to hair loss showed promising results: after five weeks, hair regrowth covered nearly two-thirds of the treated area, significantly outperforming conventional minoxidil applications.
Why the combination may work
Dermatologists explain that minoxidil’s limited efficacy is often due to poor skin penetration. Stevioside appears to enhance solubility, enabling more minoxidil to pass through the skin barrier when paired with microneedle delivery. In essence, the compound does not alter minoxidil itself—it improves its delivery to the targeted area.
Caution for consumers
Experts emphasize that adding stevia powder to minoxidil or applying it directly to the scalp will not replicate these results. Without proper formulation and controlled microneedling, the approach is ineffective and may irritate the skin. Furthermore, the research is still in preclinical stages, and human trials are necessary before it can be considered a viable treatment option.
Current recommendations for hair loss
For those experiencing persistent hair fall, dermatologists remain the best resource. Effective treatments often combine approaches tailored to the underlying cause, including microneedling, medications, laser therapy, PRP, scalp care, or, in advanced cases, surgery.
While the stevioside-minoxidil link offers a promising avenue for future therapies, it remains experimental. For now, consistent, evidence-based treatment remains the most reliable strategy for combating hair loss.
