A new £7.5 million mental health facility for mothers has officially opened in Chester, offering vital support to women across Cheshire, Merseyside, and North Wales. Seren Lodge, a single-storey, eight-bed unit, provides specialist care to pregnant and postnatal women facing severe mental health challenges.
The name “Seren Lodge” was chosen with input from mothers who have experienced mental health difficulties during pregnancy and post-birth. The word “seren” is Welsh for “star,” symbolizing hope and a new beginning for those in need of care. This reflects the collaborative effort between Wales and England to address a critical gap in mental health services.
Professor Bev Sapre, Clinical Director for Perinatal Services at Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, highlighted the importance of Seren Lodge. “It will offer support to new and expectant mothers in a therapeutic environment designed for those suffering from conditions like postnatal depression, psychosis, or a relapse of previous mental health issues,” said Sapre.
One in four women experience mental health issues during pregnancy or within the first two years after childbirth. The perinatal period can be one of the most vulnerable times in a woman’s life. Having timely access to specialized care can make a significant difference in their recovery, and Seren Lodge will now offer this care closer to home for many women who would otherwise have to travel long distances for treatment.
Women with lived experience of maternal mental health difficulties were actively involved in designing the facility. This collaboration ensured that Seren Lodge meets the needs of its residents, with features such as cushioned headboards for easier night feeds and adjustable lighting to create a soothing atmosphere.
Nia, an Expert by Experience, shared her personal journey. After experiencing severe mental health issues following the birth of her son, Nia campaigned for a dedicated facility in North Wales. “I’ve been involved from the very beginning, and now mothers in North Wales, Cheshire, and Merseyside will have access to the care they need,” she said.
The opening ceremony included a special celebration attended by the Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Sherin Akhtar, as well as performances from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and local group Singing Mamas. The event emphasized the power of music in supporting mental wellbeing.
Seren Lodge is the result of a partnership between Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CWP), Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, NHS England, and NHS Wales. Teresa Owen, Executive Director of Allied Health Professionals at BCUHB, spoke about the importance of having a local unit. “Women in North Wales previously had to travel to services in England, sometimes as far as Manchester or Birmingham. This new facility brings much-needed care closer to home.”
By opening Seren Lodge, the partners have made it easier for mothers to access vital support while staying connected to their families, particularly during the challenging festive season. This facility marks a significant step forward in improving maternal mental health care in the region.
