Survey Finds 56% of Psychologists Using AI in Mental Health Services

by Shreeya

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into psychological practice, but its development is accompanied by caution.

According to the American Psychological Association’s 2025 Pulse of Practitioners Survey, nearly 90% of psychologists are concerned about the potential risks of using AI. The survey collected opinions from over 1,700 professionals across the United States.

In recent years, the application of AI in psychology has exploded. Last year, 56% of psychologists reported using AI tools in their work, a significant increase from 29% in 2024.

Currently, about one-third of respondents use AI monthly. Despite rapid growth, the technology is primarily used for administrative and supportive tasks, rather than core therapeutic functions.

The most common applications include composing emails and other routine communications, with 52% of psychologists reporting using AI for these tasks. Summarizing clinical notes or professional literature is another common use, mentioned by 32% of respondents; 33% use AI for content creation, and 22% use it for note-taking.

Only a small percentage of practitioners use AI for sensitive clinical work, such as diagnostic support (8%) or patient-facing chatbots (5%).

These findings suggest that while artificial intelligence is becoming a common tool in mental health institutions, it still plays a supporting role. Psychologists are using technology to streamline workflows and reduce administrative burdens, but they remain cautious about delegating core clinical responsibilities to AI.
