Georgia Health Insurance Premiums Could Double if ACA Tax Credits Expire

by Shreeya

About 1.4 million Georgians could see their health insurance premiums double if Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits expire at the end of the year, experts warn. The possibility has raised concerns among small business owners and lawmakers alike.

Local Impact

Sheri Barlow, whose family has owned a small medical practice in Albany for more than 40 years, described the potential financial strain during a virtual press conference with U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff.

“When I looked at the letter, my heart sank because it absolutely doubled,” Barlow said, referring to projected premiums for next year. “When your insurance premiums double for yourself and your employees, and the rate is set for businesses with Medicare and Medicaid, where do you pull it from? Do you pull it from your children’s college funds?”

Barlow said the tax credits have been essential for recruiting nurses and other staff. “I was floored when I saw the removal of these tax credits. They help attract employees and allow good nurses to qualify for healthcare programs.”

Calls for Bipartisan Action

Sen. Ossoff urged Congress to extend the subsidies, appealing to lawmakers to set aside partisan differences. “Ordinary people want us to extend these tax credits. Let’s put partisan politics aside and do what’s right for Georgians and Americans,” he said.

Some Republican lawmakers have also signaled willingness to compromise. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri told reporters that party leaders need to reach an agreement. “There’s a bunch of us willing and eager to find a way forward on this,” Hawley said.

What’s Next

The Senate is scheduled to vote tomorrow on competing proposals: a GOP bill directing funds to health savings accounts and a Democratic bill to extend ACA subsidies. Advocates warn that without action, many Georgians could face significantly higher premiums in 2026.
