Chinese researchers have developed a pioneering stem cell therapy for Parkinson’s disease that reportedly brings rapid symptom relief for patients who have suffered from the disorder for decades.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that primarily affects movement. It results from the death of nerve cells in a brain region responsible for producing dopamine, a key neurotransmitter. Over time, patients may experience severe stiffness and lose the ability to care for themselves. Current treatments manage symptoms but cannot stop neuronal degeneration. Many therapies temporarily replace dopamine but fail to address the underlying loss of nerve cells.
Researchers at the First Affiliated Hospital of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei say their stem cell therapy helps patients regain lost movement by replacing damaged neurons. Since April, the team has conducted a Phase I clinical trial involving six patients. They report rapid symptom improvement alongside sustained increases in dopamine signaling in participants’ brains.
The therapy involves injecting stem cells designed to differentiate into dopamine-producing neurons. “We plant them in the patient’s brain and allow them to become new dopaminergic neurons that reshape neural networks,” said neurologist Shi Jiong, part of the study team.
Dr. Shi highlighted the efficiency of their method, stating that while leading international teams achieve a roughly 50% conversion rate, their approach reached over 80% in inducing functional dopamine-producing cells.
One participant, a 37-year-old, experienced dramatic symptom relief. His Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale score fell from 62, indicating severe disability, to 12, approaching the level of a healthy individual.
Early trial results indicate the treatment is safe, with injected cells surviving and producing dopamine. Researchers plan to expand the study to more patients to further evaluate the therapy’s potential.
