Psychologists Reveal One Question That Detects Narcissistic Traits

Meeting new people can be fascinating and rewarding, as every encounter teaches us something about human behavior. While most individuals display a mix of personality traits that foster connection, some interactions feel unusually one-sided or challenging.

This imbalance can sometimes be linked to narcissistic tendencies — a pattern of self-centered behavior and lack of empathy that affects both personal and professional relationships.

Understanding Narcissistic Personality Disorder

According to the Mayo Clinic, narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a mental health condition characterized by an exaggerated sense of self-importance, a deep need for admiration, and a limited capacity for empathy. Those with narcissistic traits often overestimate their abilities, expect special treatment, and may manipulate others to maintain their self-image.

However, identifying narcissism in everyday situations is not always straightforward. Many individuals display confidence or ambition without crossing into narcissistic behavior. The challenge lies in distinguishing between healthy self-assurance and a pathological sense of superiority.

The Key Question: “Are You a Narcissist?”

Criminal psychologist Dr. Julia Shaw, known for her work on the series Murder in Mind on the True Crime Channel, believes one straightforward question can reveal a great deal about someone’s personality.

In an interview with LADbible, Dr. Shaw shared an unconventional but effective approach: simply ask, “Are you a narcissist?”

She explained that genuine narcissists often have no hesitation in admitting it. “A narcissist would probably answer, ‘Yeah, but like, I am better than most people,’” Shaw said. “It’s that overconfidence, that belief you’re greater than you actually are.”

According to Dr. Shaw, narcissists often view their self-centeredness as a strength rather than a flaw. Their response typically reflects pride in their perceived superiority, making this direct question a useful litmus test for identifying narcissistic traits.

Research Supports the Finding

This insight aligns with a 2014 study conducted by researchers at Ohio State University, which found that one simple question—“How narcissistic are you?”—can be a reliable indicator of narcissistic tendencies.

Study co-author Brad Bushman explained, “People who are narcissists are almost proud of the fact. They don’t see narcissism as a bad thing. They believe they’re superior, and they’ll say it openly.”

The study concluded that narcissists’ willingness to self-identify stems from their perception of narcissism as a positive attribute. Rather than seeing it as a personality flaw, they often associate it with confidence, ambition, and success.

Why This Matters in Everyday Life

Understanding how to recognize narcissistic behavior can improve relationships and communication. While not everyone who exhibits confidence or assertiveness is a narcissist, knowing the signs can help people navigate social and professional dynamics more effectively.

A simple, well-timed question—posed with curiosity rather than judgment—can reveal how someone views themselves and others. And as Dr. Shaw’s findings and the Ohio State research suggest, narcissists often tell you exactly who they are—you just have to ask.
