Six in Ten Construction Workers Face Anxiety and Depression

by Shreeya

Almost 64% of construction workers surveyed said they experienced anxiety or depression in the past year. This number has risen from 54% in 2024, according to a new survey by design-build firm Clayco.

Use of mental health services increasing but stigma remains

The study found that 44% of workers have used mental health services or taken prescribed medications for a mental health issue in the last year. However, 45% still feel ashamed to discuss their mental health, and 37% reported facing discrimination at work for doing so.

Leadership urged to create supportive work environments

Anthony Johnson, CEO of Clayco, emphasized the need for the industry to focus on mental health as well as physical safety. “We must ensure every worker feels valued, supported, and able to thrive,” Johnson said. “Only then can we reduce the number of people carrying this weight alone.”

Survey includes workers and executives

The 2025 survey, conducted by Atomik Research, involved more than 1,000 construction workers and over 1,000 industry executives. While 80% of executives say workers have access to mental health support, only 61% of workers agree.

Industry-wide effort needed to tackle depression and substance misuse

Dan Lester, vice president of field culture and inclusion at Clayco, said the survey shows mental health challenges continue to grow. The increase in reported depression and substance misuse may also reflect a willingness among workers to speak openly about these issues due to greater awareness.

Encouraging signs but work remains

Lester noted that more workers are using support programs and medications than last year, showing progress. Still, he stressed that reducing stigma and improving access to resources will require coordinated action across the construction industry.
