We often slip our smartphones into our pockets without a second thought. But new insights suggest this everyday habit could be quietly affecting male fertility.
Dr. Mannan Gupta, chairman and HOD of the IVF Department at Elantis Healthcare, New Delhi, explains that the science is still evolving. Laboratory and observational studies indicate that radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF)—the invisible radiation emitted by phones—may impair sperm quality, motility, and DNA integrity. Some sperm samples exposed to these fields showed increased oxidative stress and reduced movement.
However, Dr. Gupta cautions that most evidence comes from laboratory or animal studies, and large-scale human research proving a direct cause-and-effect relationship is still lacking.
Heat vs. Radiation: What Harms Sperm More?
Both heat and radiation may play a role. Smartphones generate heat during use, and when tucked in a pocket, this can raise the temperature around the testes—a factor known to disrupt sperm production. This is referred to as the thermal effect.
Meanwhile, the non-thermal effects of radiation may trigger oxidative stress, damaging DNA and cell membranes. While the impact of heat is better established, radiation’s role remains controversial, Dr. Gupta notes.
The Molecular Mechanism
Prolonged exposure may increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), unstable molecules that damage cells—essentially creating a “rusting” effect inside the body. Over time, this can:
- Lower sperm motility
- Reduce sperm count
- Cause DNA damage
Long-Term Risks of Pocket Phones
Storing phones in trouser pockets for long periods may gradually increase scrotal temperature and oxidative stress. While it won’t cause immediate infertility, years of exposure could slowly diminish sperm count and quality.
When compared with known fertility threats like smoking, obesity, and heavy drinking, smartphone exposure presents a smaller, less proven risk—but it is not zero. Combined with other lifestyle factors, such as late-night junk food or alcohol, the cumulative effect may be significant.
Who Is Most at Risk?
Younger men may face higher exposure due to frequent phone use and closer contact with their bodies. Over time, even small effects could add up, making precautionary measures worthwhile.
Simple Steps to Reduce Risk
While doctors do not yet recommend completely avoiding pocket storage, small changes can help:
- Keep phones in bags, desks, or blazer pockets instead of trousers
- Use airplane mode when carrying the phone close to the body
- Maintain even a few centimeters of distance, as radiation exposure drops sharply with distance
Dr. Gupta emphasizes that these minor adjustments could help protect long-term fertility. “Better safe than sorry,” he says.
