For men, erectile quality is more than a measure of sexual performance—it reflects overall health. A strong, firm erection indicates well-functioning blood vessels, hormones, and nerves.
“Erectile strength is crucial for maintaining optimal sexual performance. Broadly, it can be classified into four levels,” explained Dr. Jefry Tribowo, Sp.And, a specialist in andrology, in a video on his YouTube channel.
Level 4 represents the ideal state, where the penis is fully firm, allowing smooth sexual activity. However, as men age, erectile quality often declines.
“Level 4 firmness is a sign of a healthy man with strong erectile function. Unfortunately, many men experience a drop in erectile strength over time,” Dr. Jefry noted.
Some men panic and seek quick fixes, often turning to unverified drugs, herbal remedies, or foods advertised to boost erections.
“This is a common mistake. Many of these products contain high levels of chemical drugs, which can lead to serious health risks,” he warned.
Dr. Jefry recommends six natural methods to improve erectile quality safely:
1. Eat a Healthy Diet
No food provides an instant erection. A balanced diet that supports blood flow and maintains testosterone levels is key.
“The best foods for erectile function include watermelon, avocado, fish, whole grains, coffee, and green vegetables. Fresh fruit, vegetables, lean meat, and nuts are also beneficial,” he advised. Limit fried foods, sugary drinks, and processed meats.
2. Exercise and Targeted Pelvic Training
Regular physical activity enhances circulation and testosterone levels. Aim for 150 minutes of exercise per week, such as running, swimming, or aerobic workouts. Complement this with Kegel exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, essential for erections and ejaculation.
“Avoid long cycling sessions on hard saddles, as they can compress nerves and reduce penile blood flow,” Dr. Jefry added.
3. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol
Tobacco, alcohol, recreational drugs, and marijuana can damage blood vessels over time, reducing erectile quality.
4. Ensure Quality Sleep
Sleep deprivation lowers testosterone production and may affect testicular size. Adult men should aim for 7–9 hours of consistent nightly sleep.
5. Manage Stress Effectively
Excess stress can lead to psychogenic erectile dysfunction, especially in younger men. Relaxation techniques, journaling, open communication with a partner, or consulting a psychologist can help manage stress.
6. Schedule Regular Medical Check-Ups
Erectile health is closely linked to overall cardiovascular, metabolic, and hormonal health. Conditions like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and obesity significantly impact erectile function.
Men under 40 should undergo check-ups every 2–3 years, while those over 40 should do so annually. “Early detection of health issues can help maintain optimal erectile function,” Dr. Jefry emphasized.
