Darren Thompson, a community advocate from Washington, D.C., has been named one of five finalists in Wahl®’s annual Benevolent Beards Contest, a national competition recognizing men who pair grooming with goodwill.
Thompson founded the East River Dog Park Group in 2017 to bring a much-needed dog park to his neighborhood, a project that culminated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 10, 2024. Along the way, the group expanded its mission, hosting outdoor movie nights, organizing teacher appreciation efforts, providing free breakfasts for local children, and now working to establish a farmers’ market.
The competition highlights inspiring finalists from across the country:
Kevin Simmons, Gainesville, GA – A pediatric speech pathologist who volunteers as a sensory barber through ConnectAbility, helping children with disabilities receive stress-free haircuts.
Miguel Delvalle, Hartford, CT – Once homeless himself, Delvalle now runs a barbershop and founded Scissors Society, Inc., providing free haircuts to shelter residents.
Jesse Presson, Charlottesville, VA – A U.S. Army veteran and advocate for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Presson works with the Hyperbaric Wellness Foundation to expand treatment access for veterans.
Ryan Saunders, Seattle, WA – Managing director of the National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY), Saunders champions young filmmakers and fosters inclusive creative opportunities.
Now in its fourth year, the Wahl® Benevolent Beards Contest invites men nationwide to showcase how their charitable efforts strengthen communities. The grand prize winner will also host a charity grooming event featuring free beard trims from the Wahl® Mobile Barbershop.
