The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Vizz 1.44% (aceclidine ophthalmic solution), a novel eye drop treatment designed to improve near vision in adults experiencing presbyopia, the natural age-related difficulty focusing on close objects.
Vizz is the first eye drop based on aceclidine to target presbyopia by gently contracting the iris sphincter muscle, creating a pinhole effect that reduces the pupil size to less than 2 mm. This adjustment increases the eye’s depth of focus, allowing for clearer near vision without causing nearsightedness.
Clinical studies underpinning the FDA’s approval included over 600 participants who used Vizz daily. These trials demonstrated that near vision improved within 30 minutes of application and lasted up to 10 hours.
Importantly, the treatment showed a strong safety profile, with no serious side effects linked to the eye drops over extended use. Mild and temporary effects such as eye irritation, slight dimming of vision, and headaches were the most commonly reported issues.
Eye care specialists, including Dr. Marc Bloomenstein of the Schwartz Laser Eye Care Center, highlight this approval as a significant advancement in addressing age-related vision challenges, offering millions a safe and effective alternative to glasses or surgery.
Vizz’s approval by the FDA marks an important step forward in eye health, providing a new, convenient option for adults seeking to maintain visual clarity and improve quality of life as they age. The treatment was developed and brought to market by LENZ Therapeutics.
