At 95, Clint Eastwood remains a paragon of vitality, and new insights into his enduring health reveal a decades-long commitment to fitness, mindful eating, and a meditative practice that balances his iconic tough-guy persona.
Celebrity biographer Shawn Levy, author of Clint: The Man and the Movies, shed light on the actor-director’s wellness habits in a recent Air Mail article, describing Eastwood as a “lifelong gym rat and fitness freak” with a diet ahead of its time.
Since the 1950s—when alfalfa sprouts and yogurt were considered exotic—he has adhered to an organic, low-fat regimen, and by the 1960s, he was already singing the praises of sushi, Levy noted.
Perhaps most striking is Eastwood’s dedication to Transcendental Meditation (TM), a practice he has maintained daily—often twice daily—since the mid-1970s, even amid the chaos of filming.
“Indeed, especially while working,” Levy wrote, highlighting the contrast between Eastwood’s rough-and-tumble on-screen roles (like the Man with No Name and Dirty Harry) and his behind-the-scenes meditation rituals. Levy called him a “man of contradictions,” one who “mirrored the best and worst” of America’s national character.
What Is Transcendental Meditation?
Transcendental Meditation, or TM, is a technique designed to induce deep mental and physical rest by dissolving stress in the nervous system, according to the official TM website. Practitioners use a mantra to focus attention, fostering a state of “relaxed awareness” that avoids distracting thoughts.
Over time, the practice is said to enhance brain function, with regular users reporting increased inner peace, creativity, better health, and stronger relationships.
Medical experts, as noted in a WebMD guide, explain that TM aims to transcend ordinary thinking, leading to “pure consciousness”—a state of stillness, stability, and mental clarity. Potential health benefits include reduced stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as lower blood pressure and improved sleep. However, experts caution that TM (and meditation in general) should not replace medical treatment for specific conditions.
TM training is offered through the nonprofit Maharishi Foundation, which provides multi-session group courses led by certified instructors. Fox News Digital has reached out to the foundation for comment.
Eastwood’s blend of physical rigor, nutritional discipline, and meditative calm offers a timeless blueprint for longevity—proving that even in a life of high-stakes drama, balance remains key.
