Psychedelic Retreats Boost Veterans’ Mental Health and Reintegration

A new observational study in Brain and Behavior suggests that communal psychedelic retreats may offer rapid, measurable mental health benefits for military veterans struggling with depression, post‑traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the challenges of returning to civilian life.

Researchers, in partnership with the Heroic Hearts Project and Imperial College London, enrolled 58 veterans—most in their 40s with prior PTSD diagnoses—for week‑long retreats in Jamaica (psilocybin) or Peru (ayahuasca).

Before departure, each participant underwent comprehensive medical and psychological screening to rule out contraindications. During the retreat, veterans received two psilocybin‑tea sessions (spaced 48 hours apart) or three ayahuasca ceremonies led by indigenous facilitators, alongside group and one‑on‑one integration coaching to foster emotional processing and peer support.

Four weeks after returning home, veterans reported a 29% average drop in depression scores and a 26% reduction in PTSD symptoms. Anxiety, sleep quality, post‑concussion issues, and overall well‑being also improved significantly, while self‑rated reintegration difficulties declined by 18%.

Those with the most severe baseline symptoms experienced the largest gains. Notably, psilocybin attendees saw greater overall symptom relief, whereas ayahuasca participants demonstrated slightly larger PTSD score reductions.

Lead author Grace Blest‑Hopley of King’s College London emphasized that these short‑term findings “underscore the potential of psychedelic‑assisted retreats as a holistic, scalable mental health intervention for veterans.”

However, the study’s observational design—lacking placebo controls and long‑term follow‑up—means further randomized trials are essential to isolate drug effects from the supportive retreat environment and confirm durability of benefits.

The research team hopes to leverage these promising real‑world outcomes to design rigorous future studies and expand safe, evidence‑based psychedelic therapies for veterans in need.
