Pushups After 50: A Simple Test of Strength and Longevity

by Shreeya

For adults over 50, the ability to perform pushups with good form isn’t just impressive—it’s a reliable indicator of overall fitness, balance, and injury resilience. According to Leon Veal, a level three personal trainer and head of nutrition and innovation at fitness brand Styrkr, pushups are a powerful tool to assess full-body strength and control.

“Pushups activate multiple muscle groups at once—arms, shoulders, core, chest, and legs,” Veal explains. “If you can do them correctly at 50 or older, it’s a strong sign your muscular strength, mobility, and coordination are well-maintained.”

How Many Pushups Should You Aim For After 50?

According to Veal, a good fitness benchmark for adults over 50 is:

  • Men: 20 to 25 pushups with proper form
  • Women: 10 to 15 pushups with proper form

“It’s not just about numbers—form is everything,” Veal emphasizes. “Ten slow, controlled pushups with a straight back and engaged core are more valuable than 25 sloppy ones.”

Starting Small: Build Your Way Up

For those not yet at this level, incline pushups (done with hands on a wall or bench) or knee pushups are excellent starting points. What matters most is keeping the body aligned and the core engaged.

“Progression is key,” Veal says. “Start where you’re comfortable, then gradually lower the incline until you can perform a full pushup from the ground.”

Why Pushups Matter as We Age

Pushups aren’t just about muscular endurance—they reflect your functional strength, Veal explains. That’s the type of strength that supports everyday movements like getting up off the floor, bracing during a fall, or carrying groceries.

Additionally, pushups enhance core stability and even provide a mild cardio benefit when done in sets. “It’s a simple move, but it covers multiple areas of fitness in one go,” says Veal.

The Takeaway

Being able to perform pushups correctly after age 50 isn’t just a matter of pride—it’s a sign of lasting health, strength, and resilience. Whether you’re already doing 25 or just starting with a wall pushup, consistency and form will keep your body strong and injury-resistant for years to come.
