- Depressive symptoms
- High cholesterol
- Low physical activity
- Social isolation
- Hearing loss
- Chronic stress
- Unmanaged pain
- Poor diet
- Elevated blood sugar levels (fasting plasma glucose)
- Lack of cognitive activity
- Excessive sleep duration
- Alcohol abuse
- Lack of life purpose
Of these, high blood pressure and kidney disease showed the strongest association with increased brain disease burden.

The findings are already being incorporated into public tools. The McCance Brain Care Score, a self-assessment for brain health developed by the research team, has been updated based on these results.
