New Covid Variant ‘Stratus’ Causes Hoarseness, Spreads Fast

by Shreeya

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified a new Covid-19 variant, officially named XFG and informally called “Stratus,” which is rapidly spreading across the northern hemisphere this summer. Although the risk to public health remains low, Stratus is notable for causing hoarseness, a symptom less common in previous variants.

What is Stratus?

Stratus is a recombinant variant formed by the combination of two lineages, LF.7 and LP.8.1.2. Compared to the earlier dominant JN1 variant, Stratus carries distinct mutations in its spike protein, specifically at amino acids 478 and 487. These mutations enhance the virus’s ability to evade antibodies, potentially making it more adept at bypassing immune defenses.

Spread and Symptoms

Initially dominant in India during spring, Stratus has now been detected in 38 countries worldwide. Data from Gisaid shows that Stratus accounted for 22.7% of Covid samples in late May, up from 7.4% just a month earlier.

Common symptoms reported include hoarseness, dry cough, sore throat, fever, muscle aches, and fatigue. Importantly, there is no evidence that Stratus causes more severe illness or higher mortality rates than other variants.

Vaccine Effectiveness and Public Health Advice

The WHO confirms that current Covid-19 vaccines remain effective in preventing symptomatic and severe disease caused by Stratus. Ongoing monitoring will guide any necessary updates to vaccines. Experts recommend continuing standard Covid precautions: staying up to date with vaccinations, practicing good hand hygiene, and wearing masks in crowded or high-risk settings.

Practical Tips for Those Experiencing Hoarseness Amid Covid

  • Stay hydrated and rest your voice.
  • Use a humidifier to soothe your throat.
  • Avoid smoking and irritants that can worsen hoarseness.
  • Seek medical advice if hoarseness persists beyond two weeks or is accompanied by difficulty breathing.

By understanding the evolving nature of Covid variants like Stratus and maintaining preventive measures, individuals can protect their health while navigating this ongoing pandemic phase.
