How Gut-Friendly Foods Could Help Lower Stress?

by Shreeya

Recent research highlights the important role the gut microbiome—the trillions of microorganisms living in our digestive system—plays in managing stress.

The gut and brain communicate through the vagus nerve and by metabolites produced when gut bacteria break down dietary fibers. This connection, known as the “microbiome-gut-brain axis,” influences how our body responds to stress.

Stress can seriously harm health, increasing the risk of diseases like heart problems, metabolic syndrome, musculoskeletal issues, and depression. Since diet strongly affects the microbiome’s composition, scientists are exploring whether certain foods can help reduce stress.

A new study from Japan involved over 1,000 healthy adults aged 20 to 80. Researchers grouped participants by their stress levels and analyzed their diets and gut bacteria.

They found those with the highest stress had poorer diets, eating fewer vegetables and legumes such as bell peppers, tomatoes, and natto (a fermented soybean dish). These stressed individuals also had fewer beneficial gut bacteria like Ruminococcus and Lachnospira.

Interestingly, the study showed diet alone did not directly lower stress. Instead, the effect seems to come through gut bacteria—particularly Lachnospira—which may mediate the diet’s impact on stress levels.

Diets rich in fibers, polyphenols (natural antioxidants), and fermented foods—such as sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha, tempeh, and kimchi—support beneficial bacteria that may help regulate stress.

Although the study had some limitations, its findings align with earlier research from Europe, which also found that a “psychobiotic diet” focused on microbiome-friendly foods can reduce stress.

In summary, eating more fiber-rich vegetables, legumes, and fermented foods may not only improve gut health but also help ease stress naturally.
