FDA Approves Darolutamide for Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatment

by Shreeya

A new pill called darolutamide (brand name: Nubeqa) has just been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help men with a type of advanced prostate cancer.

This type of cancer, called metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC), is when the cancer has spread but still responds to treatments that lower testosterone levels.

What the Research Shows

The approval is based on a study of 669 men. Some took darolutamide, and others took a fake pill (placebo). Everyone also got standard hormone treatment or had their testicles removed, which is a common treatment to lower testosterone.

The main goal was to see how long it took before the cancer started growing again. The results were clear:

  • Men who took darolutamide went much longer without their cancer spreading.
  • In the placebo group, cancer started to grow again after about 25 months.
  • In the darolutamide group, the cancer stayed under control for even longer — doctors couldn’t even measure the average yet.

There was no clear increase in overall survival (how long patients lived), but darolutamide showed promise and may help in the long term.

Side Effects and Safety

The side effects of darolutamide are similar to what doctors already know. Some serious warnings include:

  • Heart problems
  • Seizures
  • Risks during pregnancy (even though this treatment is for men, this warning matters for people around them)
  • Doctors say it’s important to use the drug under careful supervision.

How to Take It

Darolutamide is taken as two pills, twice a day with food. You keep taking it as long as it’s working and side effects are manageable.

Why This Matters

This new option gives men with advanced prostate cancer a way to slow the disease without immediately turning to chemotherapy. It’s a big step forward for patients and families looking for more time and better control of the disease.

If you or someone you know is dealing with prostate cancer, talk to a doctor about whether this treatment could help.
