A new report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) warns that nearly 11 million people would lose their health insurance if the House Republicans’ tax bill becomes law. This loss of coverage is a major factor in how the bill would save money to help pay for President Trump’s proposed tax cuts.
In addition to those 10.9 million losing insurance directly due to the tax bill, another 5.1 million people could become uninsured because of changes to the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
These changes include the expiration of ACA subsidies and new rules proposed by Trump’s health department. The CBO noted that these additional losses are separate from its official estimate of the tax bill’s effects.
This combined impact highlights concerns about the tax plan’s consequences for health coverage in the United States. The findings add to ongoing debates about how the bill balances tax cuts with potential costs to public health programs.
