Angel City’s Savy King Recovering After Emergency Heart Surgery

by Shreeya

Angel City FC defender Savy King is recovering after undergoing heart surgery following an on-field collapse during a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) match against the Utah Royals on Friday night.

The 18-year-old collapsed in the 74th minute, prompting immediate medical attention. She was treated on the field for about 10 minutes before being stretchered off and transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. There, doctors identified a heart abnormality and performed surgery on Tuesday.

Angel City confirmed that King is “resting and recovering surrounded by her family,” and her prognosis is “excellent.”

In a joint statement, King’s family expressed gratitude for the swift action and support: “We have been so moved by the love and support from Angel City players, staff, fans, and the broader soccer community. Savy is recovering well and we look forward to having her home soon.”

The incident visibly distressed players from both teams. Many, including U.S. national team forward Trinity Rodman, expressed concern that the match continued after the collapse. “In no world should that game have continued,” Rodman wrote on Instagram.

The NWSL and Angel City both thanked the medical personnel and paramedics for their quick response.

King, a promising young defender, joined Angel City this season. The timeline for her return to the field remains uncertain.
