UK Drivers Warned Over “Double Car Insurance” Error That Could Cost Hundreds of Pounds a Year

by Shreeya

Motorists across the United Kingdom are being urged to check their car insurance arrangements, after new data revealed that millions may be unknowingly paying for duplicate cover, resulting in unnecessary costs without any additional protection.

An estimated 3.1 million drivers have at some point been “double insured,” meaning they held two active insurance policies for the same vehicle simultaneously. Research suggests around eight percent of motorists admit to making this mistake, accounting for just under six percent of the UK adult population.

Industry experts say the issue commonly arises during policy renewals or when switching providers, particularly if drivers fail to properly cancel their existing cover. While having two policies may appear to offer extra security, it provides no practical benefit. In the event of a claim, only one insurer will pay out, leaving the second policy redundant.

Most insurers offer a 14-day cooling-off period, allowing customers to cancel a new policy without penalty. However, missing this window can leave drivers either paying for both policies at once or facing cancellation fees to terminate one of them.

The financial impact can be significant, especially as household budgets remain under pressure. According to data from Go.Compare’s Renewal app, the average annual car insurance premium in the UK is £403. For drivers with duplicate cover, this could effectively double to more than £800 for the same level of protection.

Younger motorists are particularly affected. Drivers aged 17 to 24 already face some of the highest premiums, averaging £757 annually. If double insured, their costs could rise to approximately £1,500, making the error especially costly for less experienced policyholders.

Financial specialists are advising motorists to carefully review policy details when renewing or switching insurance. Key steps include checking start and end dates, confirming cancellation of previous policies, and monitoring bank statements for overlapping payments. Setting reminders around renewal dates is also recommended to help ensure only one active policy is maintained.

As insurance costs continue to weigh on households, experts stress that avoiding administrative errors such as double insurance can lead to substantial savings. Simple checks and greater awareness, they say, are essential to preventing unnecessary financial losses.
