Hyundai Motor Company’s IONIQ 6 N has been crowned World Performance Car at the 2026 World Car Awards, announced during the New York International Auto Show, marking another milestone in the automaker’s expansion into the high-performance vehicle segment.
The win represents Hyundai’s second victory in the category within three years, following the IONIQ 5 N’s recognition, and highlights the brand’s rapid progress in a field long dominated by internal combustion engine sports cars. It also secures a third consecutive World Performance Car title for Hyundai Motor Group, after the Kia EV6 GT claimed the award previously.
The IONIQ 6 N reflects Hyundai’s continued push to redefine performance in the electric era, combining high-output capability with a focus on driver engagement. According to the company, the model was engineered not only for speed but also to deliver the emotional driving experience typically associated with traditional sports cars.
Manfred Harrer, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D Division, said the development of the vehicle focused on balancing track-ready performance with everyday usability.
He noted that the goal was to further enhance driving dynamics beyond what was achieved with the IONIQ 5 N, while maintaining comfort suitable for daily driving, emphasizing that driving enjoyment remains a central priority.
A major aspect of the IONIQ 6 N’s design lies in its performance-oriented technologies aimed at recreating the tactile sensations of conventional performance vehicles. The model is equipped with Hyundai’s N e-Shift system, which simulates dual-clutch transmission shifts to provide a more interactive driving feel. It also features N Active Sound+, a system designed to deliver synchronized audio feedback that reflects acceleration and power output.
Hyundai said the vehicle’s chassis and suspension have been finely tuned to enhance precision and road feedback. Additional features such as the N Drift Optimizer and N Track Manager offer customizable settings tailored for track use, further appealing to driving enthusiasts.
Since its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the IONIQ 6 N has received multiple industry accolades. These include recognition as Best Electric Performance Car at the What Car? Awards, Performance Car of the Year by the Korea Automobile Journalists Association, and Best Driver’s Car at the TopGear.com EV Awards. The vehicle also earned an iF Design Award in the automotive product category.
Industry reviews have echoed this positive reception. Car and Driver described the model as feeling comparable to a traditional sports car, while Top Gear noted that drivers may easily forget it is fully electric.
The IONIQ 6 N also represents a broader strategy by Hyundai to expand its N performance division into electric motorsport and enthusiast-focused initiatives. The company has introduced the eN1 class, described as a one-make racing series for production-based EVs, and has achieved record-setting performances in electric SUV categories at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
Hyundai has also applied insights gained from its long-standing participation in the FIA World Rally Championship to accelerate the development of EV performance technologies, including experimental platforms such as the RN24 rolling lab.

With the latest award, Hyundai continues to solidify its standing as a key player in the evolving high-performance electric vehicle market.
