Chevrolet is reportedly preparing to revive the Camaro for the 2028 model year, bringing back the storied nameplate after a short hiatus and reintroducing it to the American muscle car segment alongside the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger.
The next-generation Camaro is expected to retain its identity as a rear-wheel-drive performance coupe while adopting updated underpinnings and a refreshed range of internal-combustion powertrains, including an available V-8 engine.
At launch, the revived Camaro is anticipated to remain a two-door sports coupe, though Chevrolet may broaden the lineup with additional body styles. Industry reports indicate the automaker is evaluating a four-door variant similar in concept to the latest Dodge Charger. Regardless of configuration, the Camaro is expected to keep its traditional 2+2 seating layout, with compact rear seats intended primarily for occasional passengers.
Design-wise, the new model is rumored to adopt a more pronounced fastback profile with a sloping roofline and hatchback-style rear opening, drawing styling inspiration from earlier generations of the Camaro.
The return of the Camaro would follow General Motors’ decision to discontinue the model after the 2024 model year, leaving Chevrolet without a direct entry in the affordable performance coupe segment. With the Corvette now positioned at a significantly higher price point, the Camaro’s revival would restore a more attainable sports car option within Chevrolet’s lineup while reaffirming GM’s commitment to gasoline-powered performance vehicles.
Under the skin, the next Camaro is expected to ride on an updated Alpha 2 platform—an evolution of the architecture underpinning the previous-generation Camaro as well as Cadillac’s CT4 and CT5 sedans. The revised platform is also expected to support future Cadillac and Buick models. Although earlier speculation suggested GM could move to an entirely new rear-wheel-drive platform, current reports indicate the automaker will instead refine and expand the existing Alpha architecture.
Rear-wheel drive is expected to remain standard, though all-wheel drive may be offered on select trims to improve traction in colder climates and broaden market appeal.
Powertrain offerings are likely to begin with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, potentially a version of GM’s 2.7-liter turbocharged unit already used in other Alpha-based products. The setup would help Chevrolet maintain a competitive entry price while targeting four-cylinder variants of the Ford Mustang.
Higher trims are expected to feature V-8 power, potentially including GM’s upcoming 6.7-liter LS6 small-block engine, which is projected to produce more than 500 horsepower in certain applications. Performance-focused variants succeeding the SS and ZL1 are also anticipated, with some models potentially borrowing V-8 technology from the Corvette lineup.
Transmission options are expected to include a 10-speed automatic, while a six-speed manual remains under consideration given continued demand among performance enthusiasts. A V-6 option is not expected to return as Chevrolet looks to simplify the Camaro’s engine lineup.
Despite the industry’s ongoing electrification push, an all-electric Camaro is reportedly not part of Chevrolet’s current plans. GM appears committed to preserving internal-combustion performance in the segment amid mixed consumer response to electric muscle car competitors.
Once launched, the new Camaro will compete directly against the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger, while also targeting buyers considering performance-oriented coupes such as the Nissan Z and BMW M2. Its market success will likely depend on Chevrolet’s ability to strike the right balance between performance, pricing, and styling in an increasingly niche sports coupe segment.
Production is expected to begin at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan in late 2027, ahead of the model’s scheduled 2028 launch. Pricing is expected to start at approximately $40,000 for entry-level models, with V-8-equipped variants likely surpassing $50,000.
