Hyundai Motor Company’s IONIQ 6 N has been named World Performance Car at the 2026 World Car Awards during the New York International Auto Show, reinforcing the automaker’s growing influence in the global high-performance vehicle segment.
The award marks Hyundai’s second World Performance Car victory in three years, following the IONIQ 5 N’s win in 2024, and underscores the company’s rapid ascent in a category traditionally dominated by internal combustion sports cars. The recognition also gives Hyundai Motor Group its third consecutive World Performance Car title after the Kia EV6 GT claimed the honor in 2023.
Hyundai Pushes EV Performance Further
Hyundai said the IONIQ 6 N was engineered to combine electric performance with the emotional engagement expected from enthusiast-focused sports cars, aiming to prove that EVs can deliver more than just straight-line speed.
Manfred Harrer, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D Division, said the development team focused on enhancing both track capability and everyday comfort.
“Starting with Hyundai IONIQ 5 N, our goal for IONIQ 6 N was to improve vehicle performance and dynamics even further while maintaining driving comfort for daily use,” Harrer said. “Driving pleasure matters most.”
Performance Technology Designed for Driver Engagement
A key part of the IONIQ 6 N’s appeal lies in Hyundai’s effort to replicate traditional performance-car sensations in an electric platform.
The sedan features Hyundai’s N e-Shift system, which simulates dual-clutch gear changes to create a more mechanical and interactive driving feel. It also incorporates N Active Sound+, a sound enhancement system designed to provide auditory feedback linked to acceleration and power delivery.
Hyundai said the vehicle’s chassis and suspension tuning were calibrated to maximize road feedback and precision, while features such as N Drift Optimizer and N Track Manager add track-focused customization for performance driving enthusiasts.
Garnering Global Recognition
Since debuting at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2025, the IONIQ 6 N has collected multiple industry accolades, including:
- Best Electric Performance Car at the 2026 What Car? Awards
- Performance Car of the Year from the Korea Automobile Journalists Association
- Best Driver’s Car at the 2026 TopGear.com EV Awards
- 2026 iF Design Award in Automotive Product
Automotive media have also praised the vehicle’s driving dynamics, with Car and Driver stating that “the 6 N feels like a sports car,” while Top Gear said drivers “keep forgetting that it’s electric entirely.”
Expanding Hyundai N’s Motorsport-Inspired EV Strategy
Hyundai said the IONIQ 6 N reflects the broader expansion of its N performance division, which continues to develop EV-focused motorsport and enthusiast programs.
The automaker has launched the eN1 class, described as the world’s only one-make race series for production-based EVs, and recently set records in electric SUV categories at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
The company has also leveraged lessons from its 11 years in the FIA World Rally Championship to develop advanced EV performance technologies, including the RN24 rolling lab based on the IONIQ 5 N’s power electronics platform.
