Hyundai has offered an early real-world glimpse of its upcoming IONIQ electric vehicle lineup in China, just days after unveiling the new “Earth” and “Venus” concepts. The appearance signals the brand’s growing push into the world’s largest EV market as it prepares to compete with local leaders such as BYD.
The automaker recently introduced the Earth and Venus concepts in Beijing, positioning them as the first models under a new China-focused IONIQ EV strategy. Earth is described as a “dependable family SUV,” while Venus is a “trend-setting sedan” designed to appeal to younger, tech-focused buyers.
Both models will officially debut production versions at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, where Hyundai is expected to outline its broader electrification strategy for the region. Beijing Hyundai president Li Fenggang stated that the upcoming production vehicles will integrate “smart driving and smart cabin experiences” tailored specifically for Chinese consumers.
Unlike global IONIQ models such as the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9, the new China-exclusive EVs adopt a distinct design direction under Hyundai’s “Lead, don’t follow” philosophy. The styling is defined by a “single-curve silhouette,” marking a clear departure from the brand’s existing global EV lineup.
Shortly after the unveiling, a camouflaged prototype of the Venus sedan was spotted on public roads, offering the first indication of how closely the production model will resemble the concept. Spy images show a design that remains largely intact, including slim LED headlights connected by a full-width light bar across the front, reinforcing a futuristic appearance.
Hyundai has confirmed that all new IONIQ EVs in China will adopt planetary names, a naming strategy intended to symbolize how each vehicle revolves around the driver experience.
The upcoming models are also expected to feature Hyundai’s new Pleos Connect system, an Android-based software platform designed to deliver a smartphone-like interface and advanced connectivity features, positioning it in direct competition with leading EV infotainment systems in the market.
Further details on the Earth and Venus production models will be revealed at Hyundai’s press conference during the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, where the company will present its strategy for expanding its footprint in China’s highly competitive electric vehicle sector.
