Mercedes-Benz Unveils 2027 EQS With 800V Charging, Steer-by-Wire and Major EV Upgrades

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the 2027 EQS with substantial hardware and software upgrades aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of its flagship electric sedan, addressing criticisms that have followed the model since its launch.

The updated EQS introduces an 800-volt electrical architecture, replacing the previous 400-volt system that had limited charging performance. The new setup enables charging speeds of up to 350 kW at compatible stations and 175 kW when connected to 400-volt chargers, significantly reducing charging times. Mercedes has also improved regenerative braking capability, with energy recuperation increasing to 385 kW.

Although the 2027 EQS remains based on Mercedes’ existing MEA electric vehicle platform, it now incorporates technology developed for the company’s upcoming MB.EA architecture, which will also underpin future electric versions of the GLC SUV and C-Class sedan. Among the enhancements are newly developed electric drive units and a rear motor equipped with a two-speed transaxle, designed to improve acceleration, efficiency, and sustained performance at higher speeds.

Battery technology has also been upgraded. A revised battery chemistry featuring silicon-oxide and graphite anodes with reduced cobalt content raises energy density, allowing Mercedes to increase battery capacity from 118 kWh to 122 kWh within the same packaging footprint. The company estimates the EQS will deliver between 544 and 575 miles of range under the WLTP testing standard.

One of the most notable additions is optional steer-by-wire technology, making Mercedes the first German automaker to offer a production vehicle without a mechanical steering shaft backup. The system allows steering input through a yoke-style controller with a maximum rotation of 170 degrees, eliminating the need for hand-over-hand steering. Traditional electromechanical steering with a round steering wheel will remain available for buyers who prefer a conventional setup.

Exterior styling updates remain relatively subtle, preserving the EQS’s aerodynamic silhouette while adding new hood contours, revised AMG-Line grille elements, illuminated star detailing, and upgraded Digital Light headlights. Mercedes says the new headlamp system delivers improved visibility while consuming 50% less energy than before.

Inside the cabin, the EQS receives the latest version of Mercedes’ MB.OS operating system, featuring an upgraded MBUX Virtual Assistant capable of drawing on multiple AI platforms including Google Gemini and ChatGPT. The navigation system has also been enhanced with AI-powered route planning that factors in terrain, weather, traffic, and wind conditions to optimize energy consumption and charging stops.

Additional interior upgrades include heated front seatbelts, larger 13.1-inch rear entertainment displays with integrated HD cameras for videoconferencing, and expanded over-the-air software capabilities. New driver assistance features include improved parking automation, reverse maneuvering memory for up to 500 feet, and suspension tuning that uses shared road-condition data from other Mercedes vehicles to improve ride comfort.

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS will continue to be offered in 450+, 500 4Matic, and 580 4Matic variants. Pricing is expected to range from $105,000 to $127,000, with sales scheduled to begin in September 2026.

With these upgrades, Mercedes aims to elevate the EQS in the increasingly competitive luxury EV segment, where it currently trails rivals such as the Lucid Air and BMW i7.
