Kia is advancing its vehicle lineup with the introduction of the new EV5 electric SUV and the K4 Hatchback GT-Line Turbo, highlighting the brand’s focus on electrification and sporty performance. The EV5, a mid-size electric SUV comparable in size to Kia’s popular Sportage and the Tesla Model Y, has recently been spotted testing in the United States with US license plates. This marks a potential shift from Kia’s previous stance that the EV5 would be exclusive to Canada in North America.
Originally launched in China in 2023, the EV5 has since expanded availability to markets including Europe, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, and Canada. Its presence in these regions has contributed to Kia’s resurgence in electric vehicle sales. The latest sightings of a blacked-out EV5 GT prototype with Michigan plates suggest that Kia may be preparing for a US launch or at least testing Canadian variants near the border.
The EV5 offers a variety of trim levels, starting at approximately $43,495 CAD for the entry-level Light variant, which features a 60.4 kWh battery providing up to 335 kilometers of driving range. Higher trims come equipped with an 81.4 kWh battery capable of delivering up to 460 kilometers on a single charge. The model includes advanced features such as a nearly 30-inch combined screen setup with dual 12.3-inch displays and a 5-inch climate control panel, along with “best-in-class” rear passenger legroom.
In terms of dimensions, the EV5 measures 4,610 mm long, 1,875 mm wide, and 1,675 mm tall, making it slightly larger than the Sportage. It is also equipped with a built-in NACS port for access to Tesla Superchargers in certain trims. The vehicle’s combination of competitive range, spacious interior, and modern technology positions it as a strong contender in the mid-size electric SUV market.
Alongside its electric offerings, Kia is also enhancing its turbocharged gasoline lineup with the 2026 K4 Hatchback GT-Line Turbo. This model is essentially a shortened version of the K4 sedan, trimmed by about 11 inches at the rear to create a hatchback body style reminiscent of European competitors like the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Audi A3 Sportback. While its sporty design cues are appealing, early track tests indicate that the K4 Hatchback delivers moderate rather than high-performance driving dynamics.
The addition of both electric and turbocharged models demonstrates Kia’s strategy to cater to diverse consumer preferences as it transitions toward electrification without abandoning traditional powertrains. The anticipated US introduction of the EV5 could further expand Kia’s footprint in the competitive electric vehicle market. Meanwhile, the K4 Hatchback offers an option for buyers seeking practicality combined with sporty aesthetics.
