Mercedes-Benz Introduces Advanced GLS SUV While Revamping Sales Strategy Amid Market Shifts

by Shreeya

Mercedes-Benz has introduced its latest GLS model, marking a significant step forward in the luxury SUV segment. The new GLS is designed to offer a refined experience that blends spaciousness, comfort, and advanced technology. Measuring over 200 inches in length with a 123.4-inch wheelbase, this three-row SUV provides generous interior space, including a third row that comfortably fits passengers up to 6 feet 4 inches tall. Features such as electrically adjustable seats across all rows, heated seating options, and easy access to the rear rows highlight the vehicle’s focus on passenger comfort and practicality.

The GLS integrates the advanced MB.OS operating system, which unifies infotainment, driving assistance, and comfort controls through a striking MBUX Superscreen that spans three 12.3-inch displays under one glass panel. This system supports conversational AI for more natural interaction, aiming to reduce driver distraction and enhance ease of use. Under the hood, the GLS offers two engine choices: a 375-horsepower GLS 450 4MATIC and a more powerful GLS 580 4MATIC with 530 horsepower. Both utilize a mild-hybrid system to improve efficiency and deliver smooth performance.

Mercedes-Benz also emphasizes ride quality with its standard Airmatic air suspension supplemented by optional E-active body control. This predictive suspension system adjusts each wheel independently based on road conditions shared through a connected driving ecosystem, resulting in a composed and comfortable ride even on rough surfaces. Safety and driver assistance are enhanced through an extensive sensor suite enabling advanced features like MB.Drive Assist, which will continue to improve via over-the-air updates.

In addition to product developments, Mercedes-Benz is shifting its market strategy following a sales decline in recent years. After experiencing drops of 4 percent in 2024 and 9 percent in 2025, the company aims to regain momentum by targeting mainstream premium buyers rather than focusing solely on high-end luxury segments. This strategic pivot includes plans to reintroduce popular models like the A-Class compact hatchback with a new generation expected by 2028 and updates to the C-Class lineup for 2027. The brand’s goal is to return to selling at least 2 million vehicles worldwide within five years while increasing profit margins.

Leadership changes are also underway at Mercedes-Benz Trucks with Marcus Ekman set to become head of engineering in October 2026. Ekman brings over 25 years of experience from Volvo Group and Scania, poised to guide Mercedes-Benz Trucks through industry transformations focused on carbon-neutral transport and digitalization.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz continues refining its powertrain lineup in response to tightening emissions regulations. Reports indicate that the upcoming facelift of the SL model will replace its four-cylinder engine with a more powerful six-cylinder unit while enhancing V8 engines for better performance and compliance with new standards.

The brand’s commitment to luxury extends beyond traditional models, as seen in celebrity purchases like Shah Rukh Khan acquiring the Mercedes-Benz V-Class luxury MPV. Priced at around ₹1.40 crore in India, this vehicle offers limousine-like comfort with features such as ventilated massage seats, advanced infotainment systems, and comprehensive safety technologies.

Overall, Mercedes-Benz is navigating a complex automotive landscape by blending innovation in vehicle design and technology with strategic market adjustments aimed at expanding appeal without compromising its luxury heritage.
