Kia is set to extend the life of its popular midsize sedan, the K5, with a second facelift planned for release in the first half of 2027. This move highlights Kia’s confidence in the continued demand for sedans despite the global shift toward SUVs and electric vehicles (EVs). The updated K5 is expected to remain in production until at least 2030, reflecting Kia’s strategy to maximize the model’s marketability while controlling development costs.
Rather than introducing a completely new generation, Kia will apply two partial facelifts to the K5. This approach allows the company to avoid expensive investments in new internal combustion engine (ICE) or hybrid platforms and maintain competitiveness during the gradual transition toward electrification. The decision comes amid slower-than-expected global adoption of EVs, particularly in major markets like the United States.
Recent sales data show a significant decline in U.S. EV sales by 58.9% year-on-year, while hybrid vehicle sales have surged nearly 49%, reaching record levels. In response, Hyundai Motor Group, which owns Kia, is focusing more on hybrid models rather than purely electric vehicles. The second facelifted K5 will offer a variety of powertrain options, including ICE variants, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), catering to different markets with varying regulations and infrastructure readiness.
In addition to powertrain updates, the new K5 will feature Hyundai Motor Group’s next-generation Pleos operating system. This upgrade promises improved infotainment performance and advanced software integration, enhancing the overall driving experience and technological appeal of the sedan.
Marking its 15th anniversary in 2025, the Kia K5 remains a key player in Kia’s sedan lineup. Since its debut, it has helped revive Kia’s sedan market presence and competes closely with models like the Hyundai Sonata. The current third generation of the K5 was launched in late 2019 and received its first facelift in November 2023. Despite being on the market for seven years, it continues to enjoy strong sales, especially in Korea where monthly sales exceed 3,000 units.
Meanwhile, Kia has also shared new photos of its upcoming 2027 EV3 model, an all-electric vehicle that represents part of its growing EV portfolio. These images offer a glimpse into Kia’s future electric offerings as the company balances traditional ICE vehicles with newer electric models.
The continued updates to the K5 alongside new EV launches show Kia’s dual strategy during this transitional period.
