Mercedes-Benz is advancing its electric vehicle technology with significant updates to its EQS model, introducing steer-by-wire steering and a yoke-style steering wheel. This move marks the first time a German automaker has integrated steer-by-wire technology into a production vehicle, promising a new level of driving precision and comfort.
The steer-by-wire system replaces the traditional mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels with electronic controls. This technology reduces steering effort and eliminates the vibrations caused by uneven road surfaces that drivers typically feel through the steering wheel. As a result, drivers experience smoother, more intuitive handling. The new system also allows for a flatter steering wheel rim, which improves visibility of the driver display and makes entering and exiting the vehicle easier.
In addition to enhancing driver comfort, the updated EQS features rear-axle steering that works together with the steer-by-wire system. At higher speeds, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels to increase stability and improve handling dynamics. The system has undergone extensive testing, covering over 1 million kilometers on test tracks and public roads to ensure safety and reliability. Mercedes-Benz has incorporated redundant system architecture with high-precision sensors and control units to guarantee continuous steering functionality even in case of component failure.
Alongside these technical improvements, Mercedes-Benz has redesigned the airbag structure to fit the new steering setup. Without a full circular rim on the steering wheel, the airbag uses an internal support and folding design to deploy safely and consistently while maintaining compliance with safety standards.
The 2027 model year EQS will also feature an 800-volt electrical architecture that reduces charging times and improves energy efficiency. New, more powerful electric motors named eATS 2.0 will enhance performance. Though the exterior shape remains largely unchanged from previous versions, Mercedes-Benz has hinted at design updates that make the car look more conventional compared to earlier models. Infotainment upgrades are expected as well, drawing from technology introduced in their latest S-Class luxury sedan.
Despite initial mixed reactions and slower sales since its launch, Mercedes-Benz continues to invest in refining the EQS as part of its commitment to electric mobility. The integration of steer-by-wire technology paired with advanced rear-axle steering aims to offer drivers a superior combination of control, comfort, and safety in one of the brand’s flagship electric vehicles.
