Mercedes-Benz has celebrated a significant milestone, marking 30 years of vehicle production at its Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant. Over this period, the facility has produced five million SUVs, highlighting the brand’s deep roots in the United States. Despite being a German company, Mercedes-Benz has made substantial investments in American manufacturing, reinforcing its commitment to the U.S. market and economy.
The Tuscaloosa plant currently produces several key models, including the GLE and GLS SUVs, as well as luxury vehicles like the Mercedes-Maybach GLS. In a recent ceremony introducing new GLE and GLS models built at this location, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius emphasized the importance of the site to the company’s global operations. The event was attended by prominent figures such as U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz plans to invest more than $7 billion in its U.S. operations by 2030. A significant portion of this—$4 billion—is allocated to expanding the Alabama plant to increase capacity for producing the next-generation GLC crossover. This move is strategic, helping Mercedes-Benz avoid a 15% tariff on imported vehicles and addressing rising demand for the popular GLC model, which saw a 20% sales increase in 2025.
The Alabama facility employs approximately 5,800 workers and is part of a broader U.S. footprint that includes plants in Georgia and South Carolina. These southern locations provide logistical advantages for exporting vehicles across North and South America. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz supports nearly 160,000 jobs nationwide through direct employment, supplier networks, service providers, and its dealer network.
Governor Kay Ivey praised the longstanding partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Alabama, noting how it has transformed both the state’s economy and the company’s growth in the region. The automaker also benefits from access to engineering talent across the country, with research centers in California and Michigan helping to drive innovation.
Production of prototypes for the new GLC is expected to begin at Tuscaloosa in 2028, with full production slated for 2029. This expansion underscores Mercedes-Benz’s confidence in its American manufacturing capabilities and its commitment to meeting both domestic demand and export goals.
As Mercedes-Benz continues to grow its presence in the U.S., it reinforces its role not only as a luxury car maker but also as a major contributor to local economies and employment. The company’s investments reflect a long-term strategy to integrate manufacturing with advanced technology development while serving key global markets.
