BMW is advancing its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the new i3 model, featuring a striking all-glass roof option known as the Skyroof. The automaker recently showcased a pre-production prototype at its Munich plant, where production of the i3 is set to begin in August, with European deliveries expected shortly after. This new electric 3 Series Sedan offers customers an innovative design element that floods the cabin with natural light through a panoramic glass roof stretching nearly the entire length of the vehicle.
The Skyroof option marks a significant upgrade from traditional sunroofs, aligning with industry trends favoring fixed panoramic glass roofs that enhance interior ambiance while offering climate comfort glazing. This glazing provides 100% UV protection and incorporates infrared and low-emissivity coatings to reduce heat and glare inside the car. While the standard i3 model will come with a conventional metal roof, those opting for the Skyroof can expect a more open and airy driving experience.
In addition to its aesthetic enhancements, the new i3 carries forward BMW’s commitment to electrification. The Munich plant, which has been operational for over a century, is undergoing a major transformation to focus exclusively on electric vehicle production by 2027. This strategic move underscores BMW’s dedication to sustainable mobility and positions Munich as a central hub for its electric vehicle manufacturing.
Looking ahead, BMW plans to expand the i3 range with a Touring variant anticipated to arrive later this decade. This version will likely benefit from the same advanced features seen in the current model, including the Skyroof. Meanwhile, the combustion engine versions of the next-generation 3 Series Sedan, internally designated as “G50,” are expected to debut later this year but will be produced at BMW’s Dingolfing plant instead of Munich.
BMW has yet to release complete specifications or pricing details for the new i3, but an online configurator is expected soon. Deliveries will start in Europe during the second half of this year before gradually expanding worldwide through 2027. The company’s broader plan highlights its transition towards fully electric vehicles, aiming to meet growing consumer demand and regulatory requirements for cleaner transportation.
