BMW is preparing a significant wave of new model releases and updates, focusing heavily on electric vehicles and advanced technology. Among the most anticipated is the 2028 BMW iX7, an all-electric luxury SUV that will enter production at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in September 2027. The iX7 stands apart from other Neue Klasse electric models like the iX5 and iX3 with its more traditional, upright design. It features a distinctive split headlight layout with slim daytime running lights integrated into the kidney grille design. The SUV will offer multiple versions, including the high-performance M70 xDrive and an Alpina variant, promising impressive power figures potentially exceeding those of the current i7 M70 xDrive sedan.
Meanwhile, BMW is also advancing its electric performance lineup with the introduction of the iM3, the first fully electric M3 model. Spied recently with a vented hood designed to cool its four electric motors, the iM3 is expected to deliver around 700 horsepower at launch, with potential for even higher output in future iterations. The car features aggressive styling cues such as flared rear fenders for wider tires and large brakes to handle high-performance demands. Inside, it will share much of the i3’s futuristic interior, including the Panoramic iDrive system that replaces many traditional controls with voice and touch interfaces.
The brand is not neglecting its internal combustion engine (ICE) models either. The 2028 BMW M5 facelift has been revealed with updated styling that blends conventional design elements with subtle Neue Klasse influences. It sports slimmer headlights, wider kidney grilles, and a redesigned lower bumper featuring vertical air intakes. Inside, the M5 will receive significant tech upgrades including a panoramic digital display projected across the windshield and possibly a passenger display. The facelifted M5 continues to use the potent 4.4-liter V8 engine producing 717 horsepower in Europe, maintaining its reputation as a powerful sports sedan.
BMW’s electric ambitions extend to production plans as well. The upcoming BMW i3 Touring electric wagon will be manufactured in Munich alongside the i3 Sedan starting production in August. This marks a return of the iconic 3 Series Touring body style in an electric format and reflects BMW’s commitment to EVs at its historic home plant. Other Neue Klasse EVs are also planned for Munich production, though details remain under wraps. Production of combustion engine 3 Series Touring models is expected to continue elsewhere, as Munich transitions fully to EV manufacturing by 2027.
Adding to BMW’s accolades, the iX3 has been honored at recent World Car Awards alongside competitors like Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 N. This recognition highlights BMW’s growing leadership in electric vehicle innovation and design. With these new releases and updates spanning electric SUVs, performance sedans, and production strategies, BMW is clearly positioning itself for a future where electrification and advanced technology define its lineup.
