Cadillac’s entry into the 2026 Formula 1 season has shown notable progress, highlighted by their best race performance so far at the Japanese Grand Prix. Despite being a new team, Cadillac has quickly made advancements in both reliability and race execution, with drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas finishing consecutive races and improving their overall competitiveness.
At the Suzuka circuit, Cadillac aimed to build on their previous success from the Chinese Grand Prix, where they achieved their first double finish. Although Perez experienced damage during the first practice session due to contact with another driver, the team managed to repair the car promptly. This allowed both drivers to focus on optimizing performance during qualifying and race sessions without reliability concerns.
Qualifying presented challenges as energy deployment issues limited Cadillac’s grid positions to 19th and 20th. However, a positive sign came from outqualifying Aston Martin for the first time. During the race, strategic decisions included starting Bottas on hard tires while Perez began on mediums. While this strategy did not yield significant gains due to a poorly timed pit stop before a Safety Car period, both drivers improved their positions by the finish, placing 17th and 19th respectively.
Perez described the Japanese Grand Prix as “our strongest race so far this year,” emphasizing the rapid progress made by the team. He noted that despite some earlier problems with energy deployment, the team had addressed these issues effectively by race day. Bottas also acknowledged improvements, highlighting a cleaner weekend compared to earlier rounds and expressing optimism about applying lessons learned to future races.
