BMW is set to revolutionize the U.S. electric vehicle market with the upcoming 2027 i3 50 xDrive, the first of its “Neue Klasse” models arriving early next year. While the current BMW i5 electric sedan offers an official range of 278 to 310 miles—real-world performance often closer to 250–270 miles—the i3 is expected to push boundaries with an estimated 440-mile range.
Performance is equally impressive. The i3 50 xDrive features dual electric motors producing 463 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. BMW plans to offer a single-motor version in the future, with pricing likely to start between $55,000 and $65,000.
For buyers who prefer SUVs, BMW will also introduce the iX3 crossover with a twin-motor 50 xDrive configuration. Priced around $60,000, the iX3 delivers similar performance, though its less aerodynamic design reduces its range to roughly 400 miles and slows acceleration to 4.7 seconds from 0 to 60 mph.
BMW’s design direction has faced criticism in recent years for oversized grilles, but the Neue Klasse models mark a fresh aesthetic approach. Both the i3 and iX3 feature modern, streamlined styling that BMW hopes will appeal to a broader audience.
Inside, both vehicles are equipped with the new Panoramic iDrive system, highlighted by an 18-inch touchscreen angled toward the driver. Early impressions praise the system’s responsiveness. Standard interior materials include Econeer upholstery, crafted entirely from recycled PET bottles, while higher trims offer vegan black Veganza leather and BMW Individual’s black Merino leather.
Weighing approximately 4,850 pounds, the i3 requires a substantial 108-kilowatt-hour battery pack. DC fast charging supports up to 400 kW, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% in about 21 minutes. The battery also supports bidirectional charging, providing up to 3,700 watts for home backup power or recreational use. Home charging options include a 19.2-kilowatt charger.
Both models share a basic suspension setup, with the sedan offering an optional adaptive M-branded suspension for enhanced handling. BMW anticipates that entry-level i3 and iX3 models priced below $50,000 will follow shortly after the launch, broadening the appeal of these electric vehicles.
By combining impressive range, performance, and modern design, the 2027 i3 and iX3 could reignite momentum in the U.S. EV market, offering consumers compelling alternatives to conventional gasoline-powered vehicles.
