Volvo is preparing to expand its electric SUV lineup with what could become its most important model yet, the upcoming EX60. Positioned between the compact EX30 and the flagship EX90, the mid-sized EX60 is expected to play a central role in the brand’s global EV strategy.
Ahead of its official debut on January 21, Volvo has released key performance details that highlight the model’s competitive edge. The EX60 is projected to deliver up to 400 miles (approximately 644 kilometers) of range in an all-wheel-drive configuration. While this figure is not yet EPA-certified, Volvo states it was achieved using comparable testing standards. Under the WLTP cycle, the EX60 is estimated to reach around 810 kilometers of range, potentially placing it at the top of its class among European electric SUVs.
For comparison, Tesla’s Model Y offers a maximum WLTP range of up to 622 kilometers, underscoring Volvo’s ambition to lead in efficiency within the segment.
Charging performance is another key highlight. Volvo claims the EX60 can recover up to 340 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes when connected to a 400 kW fast charger, positioning it among the fastest-charging vehicles in its category. To further address long-term ownership concerns, the automaker will also offer an optional 10-year battery warranty.
The EX60 introduces new manufacturing technology for Volvo as well. It will be the company’s first model to utilize “mega casting,” a process that replaces hundreds of smaller components with a single, high-precision cast structure. This approach is expected to improve structural integrity while reducing production complexity.
While full specifications remain under wraps, early images suggest a practical and family-oriented design. Visible details include additional storage space beneath the cargo floor and folded rear seating, indicating that the EX60 will likely be available in six- and seven-seat configurations, enhancing its appeal for larger households.
Volvo will officially unveil the EX60 via livestream on its website on January 21, where further details on pricing, performance, and availability are expected to be announced.
