Volvo Trucks North America announced two major initiatives to enhance connectivity in heavy-duty vehicles at the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) Annual Meeting on Monday in Nashville. The initiatives include an expanded automatic over-the-air (OTA) software update program and the development of a high-speed wireless tractor-trailer connector.
In the past six months, Volvo’s automatic software update program has upgraded more than 80% of its connected fleet to the latest software versions, a significant rise from 25% previously. The improvements have contributed to a 24% reduction in unplanned stops for repairs or maintenance. The system, which previously handled around 1,000 updates per month, now processes up to 1,000 updates daily, with the capability to manage as many as 10,000 each day.
“Today’s trucks are basically smartphones on wheels,” said Maddie Sullivan, product marketing manager for Volvo Trucks North America. She noted that the pace of technology is so rapid that a truck purchased just six months ago may already differ significantly from one bought today.
Previously, fleet managers had to contact customer service or visit dealerships to complete software updates. The enhanced system now delivers updates in the background, allowing drivers to install them while parked or during scheduled breaks, minimizing disruption to operations.
Next-Generation Tractor-Trailer Connectivity
Volvo is also collaborating with TECTRAN Manufacturing to develop a new smart tractor-trailer connector, intended to become a new industry standard in the U.S. and Canada. Designed by Volvo engineers in Sweden, the updated connector modernizes the traditional J560 seven-pin design. Unlike the previous connector, which primarily supported lighting and basic braking signals, the new system adds high-speed wireless data transfer capabilities within the same housing.
Sullivan emphasized that as trucks become increasingly connected, trailers must evolve at the same pace. The wireless connector is engineered to support real-time data exchange for advanced safety systems and cameras, optimize powertrain performance including braking and propulsion, and provide direct trailer status alerts to drivers and fleet managers.
The technology, based on U.S. patents granted to Volvo in 2024, is compatible with existing infrastructure. Volvo plans to collaborate with industry stakeholders to position the new connector as the successor to the current 12-volt round-pin system.
