Swedish automaker Volvo Cars (VOLCARb.ST) announced on Monday that it will discontinue the EX30 and EX30 Cross Country electric SUVs in the United States after the 2026 model year. The decision comes as the company adjusts its U.S. lineup amid shifting market dynamics.
A Volvo spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that while the EX30 will no longer be sold in the U.S., the model will remain available in other markets, including Canada and Mexico. This reflects Volvo’s strategy of focusing its electric vehicle offerings where demand remains strongest.
In the U.S., Volvo sold nearly 5,400 units of the EX30 in 2025, accounting for roughly 4.4% of its total American sales. Although the figure is relatively modest, the EX30 played a role in Volvo’s broader push into the growing compact electric SUV segment.
Volvo Cars has faced challenges in the U.S. market, with overall sales falling 10% in the first three months through February. The decline was attributed to trade tariffs and other market headwinds, even as sales of fully electric vehicles posted gains during the same period.
The global electric vehicle market has also experienced turbulence, with sales dropping in February due in large part to China’s largest EV sales decline since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. The slowdown comes amid government policies slowing incentives for EV purchases worldwide.
The EX30 was launched in 2023 as part of Volvo’s effort to make electric vehicles more accessible. At its introduction, then-CEO Jim Rowan described it as a “small SUV doing Volvo things,” emphasizing the brand’s focus on safety, practicality, and Scandinavian design in a compact package.
