Volkswagen (VOWG.DE) has kicked off mass production of its first electric vehicle developed in partnership with Chinese automaker Xpeng (9868.HK), as the German carmaker aims to reclaim market share in China with over 20 new models slated for release this year.
The new ID. UNYX 08, a full-size electric SUV, marks the centerpiece of Volkswagen’s largest-ever new energy vehicle (NEV) initiative in China, a critical market where the company faces stiff competition from domestic rivals such as BYD (002594.SZ) and Geely [RIC:RIC:GEELY.UL].
Set to go on sale in the first half of this year, the ID. UNYX 08 embodies Volkswagen’s “in China, for China” strategy, which prioritizes local development and faster production cycles. The automaker says its China-focused vehicle architecture enables models to be developed 30% quicker, with the ID. UNYX 08 moving from concept to production in just 24 months.
“Our ‘in China, for China’ strategy is delivering results,” said Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen Group board member for China. “With the ID. UNYX 08, we are launching the Group’s largest electric vehicle offensive in China.”
Europe’s largest carmaker is confronting another challenging year, as tariffs and competition from local EV makers continue to weigh on its operations. Volkswagen has lost ground in China, its largest global market, where it was overtaken by Geely Auto last year and ceded its decade-long leadership to BYD in 2024.
Volkswagen plans to launch more than 20 battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in China in 2026, aiming for a total of 50 new NEVs in the market by 2030.
The ID. UNYX 08 is the first outcome of a 2023 technology partnership with Xpeng, which provides Volkswagen with autonomous driving systems and Turing AI chips integrated into the new vehicle. A second jointly developed EV is expected later this year.
Both models will be produced at Volkswagen’s Hefei plant, west of Shanghai, which has an annual capacity of 350,000 units and also manufactures the Cupra Tavascan SUV for export to Europe.
