Kia has unveiled the engineering behind its European-built EV2, a B-segment electric SUV, emphasizing a simulation-driven approach to cabin noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) refinement. By integrating acoustic tires, laminated glass, and targeted sound packages, the automaker aims to deliver a quieter, more refined driving experience than previous electric vehicles in its class.
Simulation-First NVH Strategy
The EV2’s NVH development was led by Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre (HMETC), where engineers used advanced numerical simulations and dyno-based testing to identify potential noise sources from the earliest stages of development. According to Oliver Jung, Lead Engineer at HMETC, “Early simulations helped us identify where road and wind noise could disrupt the cabin. Dyno-based testing then validated every countermeasure with repeatable data, ensuring consistent refinement across conditions.”
Acoustic Hardware and Targeted Solutions
To tackle noise challenges unique to EVs—where the absence of an engine highlights road, wind, and component sounds—Kia implemented a comprehensive acoustic package:
- Acoustic tires to reduce tonal intrusion from road surfaces
- Laminated door glass and windscreen to minimize wind turbulence noise at highway speeds
- Carpet and wheel arch absorbers to lower perceived cabin sound
- Dash insulation and frunk absorber targeting high-frequency noise from the inverter and DC/DC converter
- Optimized underbody cover to limit sound transmission from the road
This system-level approach creates a consistent and refined acoustic environment across diverse driving conditions.
EV-Specific Sound Management
The EV2 also features a dedicated sound package to control high-frequency tones from its electric powertrain, while pedestrian warning sounds and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist alerts were tuned to balance safety with occupant comfort.
Battery and Performance Options
Kia offers two battery configurations for the EV2: a 42.2 kWh standard-range pack with a WLTP range of 317 km, and a 61.0 kWh long-range pack delivering up to 453 km. Both support 400V DC fast charging, as well as 11 kW and 22 kW AC charging. The EV2 includes advanced features such as EV route planning, Plug & Charge, bidirectional charging, flexible rear seating, triple-screen displays, over-the-air updates, and up to 362 liters of cargo space.

The EV2 remains calm at higher speeds, controlled on rough roads, and consistent every day, giving drivers a sense of refinement from the very first kilometre.”
